How High Should I Mow My Instant Lawn?

Not all instant lawns are created equal, including how high you need to maintain them. At what height should you maintain your instant lawn?

Grass such as Bahia, St. Augustine, and Tall Fescue usually need to be kept tall at about 5 to 10 cm. Others like Bermuda, Zoysia, and Bent Grass need to be kept shorter at around 1 to 3 cm. We have provided below a list of the recommended height for specific instant lawn varieties.

Rule of Thumb in Mowing

Different grass types have different height requirements. There is a rule of thumb for the length of grass to keep your instant lawn for whether it is cool-season or warm-season. For cool-season grass, the estimated height is about 3.5 to 10 cm. Warm-season grass generally needs to be at around 1 to 6 cm.

These are just general recommendations. However, just like any rule, there are exceptions. It would be best to find out the ideal height for your specific instant lawn.

Rule of Thirds in Mowing

Now that you are armed with the specific height recommendations for your instant lawn do not get too excited and immediately mow it to that height.

Remember the rule of thirds when mowing your lawn—never cut more than 1/3 of the current grass length.

If your grass is a bit overgrown and exceeds way beyond the recommended height, cut a third in one mowing then wait a few more days to cut some more.

Cutting the grass more than a third of its current length will put too much stress on the grass.

If the grass is left with shorter leaves to absorb nutrients and aid in photosynthesis, it will adversely affect its health. Not only will the grass get fewer nutrients through its leaves, but there will be so much energy put into repair and recovery, instead of focusing on growth.

Sample Application of the Rule of Thirds

For example, if your Kikuyu was left unattended and grew to 10 cm, do not be tempted to cut it down to 4 cm at the first mow. Cut about a third of it first, about 3-3.5cm. Wait about 3 to 4 days before cutting another third. You will probably need one more mowing after 3 to 4 days to finally have it at the ideal height.
