How Often Should I Fertilise My Instant Lawn

You know that your instant lawn needs fertiliser to keep it lush and green. However, fertilising is not as straightforward as it seems. How often should you do it?

For regular maintenance of a healthy lawn, you should fertilise your lawn at least once a year. However, more experts recommend to fertilise two (2) to four (4) times a year—in early spring, early and late summer, and late autumn. Keeping on top of the lawn’s required nutrients will keep it lush, as well as make it resilient in fighting off weeds and diseases. More information on our lawn weeds guide here.

Fertilising for Regular Maintenance

Fertilising Once a Year

If your instant lawn is healthy and has no issue, you may opt to fertilise once a year.

If you have cool-season grass like Ryegrass, Fescue, or Bluegrass, fertilise in the fall. For warm-season grass like Buffalo, Couch, Kikuyu, and Bermuda, the ideal time is in the spring.

Fertilising Twice a Year

Should you need to fertilise twice a year, consider the type of grass and which season they grow.

For cool-season grass, fertilise in early autumn and winter. The warm-season lawn will benefit from feeding in early spring and summer. Do not fertilise you instant lawn during their dormant season, which is in the summer for cool-season grass, and in the winter for warm-season grass.

Fertilising to Fix Issues

Sometimes an instant lawn will need some additional help to resolve issues. Lawn diseases or pests could take away essential nutrients that your grass needs. More information on our guide to lawn pests here.

To help the instant lawn bounce back, fertilising three (3) to four (4) times a year may be necessary.

Fertilising a New Instant Lawn

The fertiliser is usually applied to the soil as part of its preparation for an instant lawn.

Another application of fertiliser is recommended about six (6) to eight (8) weeks after the instant lawn is placed. Proper and timely application of fertiliser ensures your growing turf gets the nutrients it needs.

Advantages of Regular Fertilisation

Regular and correct fertilisation will keep your instant lawn healthy. Balanced and fertile soil will support the robust growth of your grass.

If your lawn is at its best, it will effectively fight off lawn pest infestations.

Weeds cannot germinate and thrive in healthy turf.

Unnecessary Application of Fertiliser Will Damage the Instant Lawn

Before you go on sprinkling or spraying fertiliser on your turf, keep in mind that more is not always better. When it comes to fertilisers, more than necessary is usually harmful.

Here is a list of some of the issues you may encounter if you apply fertiliser more often than your instant lawn needs:

Fertiliser burn

Fertiliser burn happens when too much fertiliser is applied, essentially burning the leaves.

Symptoms of fertiliser burn include yellowing of the grass at first, then it eventually turns brown and dies.

Weak and dark roots

When the fertiliser seeps into the ground, the roots will absorb the nutrients. Too much imbalance of nutrients such as nitrogen and salt will kill the roots.

Consult with Professionals Before Applying Fertiliser

Fertilisers have their apparent advantages, but they can be dangerous when incorrectly applied.

They require precise measurement, such as product-to-area ratio, as well as a proper mixture of components.

The timing of the application of fertilisers is also crucial. Things to consider are the type of grass, the climate and weather, and even the time of day.

You need to carefully follow the instructions on the application of fertilisers, as well as wear proper personal protective equipment or PPE.

Do not take chances if you have little to no experience in the application of fertilisers and consult professionals.
